CAROLINE DUFFIELD - CONTEMPORARY ARTIST
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Everyone has a gift and mine is painting...........
Watercolour has a reputation as being a delicate medium, but I strive to use it to show how BIG, BOLD and BRIGHT it can be. Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe I love painting flowers up close showing their intricate detail. I can not resist mixing different media with watercolour to see what magic happens! Liquid acrylic makes paint swirl, Aqua Bronze in silver and gold gives a wonderful shimmer, salt eats the paint and sprinkling Brusho produces dense and dark backgrounds.
I am not happy until I have finished each creation. Often this means over painting with gouache or liquid acrylic ink giving a new platform to work on. I have discovered clear gloss, a 3D liquid which is great for lifting the intricate beauty of a flower. What is more, I can paint on it giving a layered effect!
As Klee said I begin by “taking a line for a walk” which is both the best and worst time - that blank page. The design and colours I can see in my mind. My routine is to switch on Radio 4 and start drawing, getting bigger and bolder as I find the design. Then, using tracing paper, I simplify the design by picking out the lines I want to use. Walking helps inspire me and gives me thinking time to work out the colours ...
